The event was attended by President Tran Dai Quang, head of the Central Commission for Communication and Education Vo Van Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics Nguyen Xuan Thang, as well as central and local officials.

In his address, Thang praised the former President as an exceptional Vietnamese man and a pioneering soldier of the Vietnamese revolution, while recalling the nearly 70 years of his revolutionary life.

Ton Duc Thang was born in 1888 in the southern province of An Giang and joined the revolutionary movement at a young age. He was elected as a member of the first National Assembly in 1946.

He had held many important posts in the government before being elected President of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1969 and later President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1976.

Papers at the workshop focused on President Ton Duc Thang’s contributions in such aspects as being the founder of the first trade union in Vietnam, a staunch communist who dedicated his whole life to the country, a representative of the Party’s national solidarity policy and a bright example of revolutionary ethics.

Many papers also highlighted President Ton Duc Thang’s special sentiments towards the people, especially those in his home province of An Giang.

On the same day, an award named after President Ton Duc Thang was given to 11 workers and engineers in Ho Chi Minh City for their excellent performance.
